Today TCCS will be conducting an intruder/lockdown drill. When this type of drill is conducted our building is on lockdown and there is no one allowed in or out of the building. Please understand that the office areas may be temporarily closed during these drills. About Drills at TCCS and TCSC: TCCS and TCSC conduct a variety of drills throughout the year as part of its overall school crisis, emergency, and safety protocols. These well-planned safety and emergency exercises take place throughout our campus for a variety of situations including fire, tornado, and active threat. School safety drills play an essential role in helping students and staff develop the knowledge and skills they need to prepare themselves during an emergency. This week we have conducted a variety of drills in accordance with Indiana Law. If you have any questions pertaining to school safety at TCCS please contact Mr. Miller at mmiller@tccs.k12.in.us or Nate Sayers at nsayers@tccs.k12.in.us.

This morning TCCS practiced school bus evacuation safety drills. The experience and information learned can save lives in an accident or emergency. If your child rides a school bus please take some time to remind them of the general safety tips that are included with this message. In addition, if your child rides a bus with seatbelts they need to be used. We are appreciative of our bus drivers and the job they do to transport students safely to and from school.

TCCS Parents and Guardians: Students practiced weather preparedness today to understand and prepare in case of a severe weather event. They also learned the difference between a watch and a warning. Did You know? Indiana averages 22 tornadoes a year. Because we know seconds count, TCCS and TCSC have developed detailed plans of action to respond to a severe weather event. The tornado drills practiced several times a year help keep students and staff prepared and work out any kinks in the drill before it is needed in real time. We also have signs posted throughout the hallways directing students and staff to safe areas. Students were also given instruction in the event of an earthquake. Drop, cover, and hold on is typical language given in the event of an earthquake. For more information please visit shakeout.org. During many of our school safety drills the elementary and MS/HS offices will be temporarily closed.

Today TCCS practiced a corporation-wide fire drill where students learned the importance of paying attention and following instructions and being prepared in an emergency. Students evacuated the building in a timely manner and went to their rally spots. Why Conduct Drills? At Tri-Central and Tipton Schools, we take drills seriously when it comes to keeping kids safe. A drill is basically a practice run of procedures set in place for fires, natural disasters, lockdowns, and more. These drills serve to evaluate the reaction of adults and students, how effectively they follow the emergency procedures, and the length of time it takes to evacuate and account for everyone. The results of a drill are crucial to identifying areas of weakness in any emergency or evacuation plan. It gives us the opportunity to reduce evacuation time, ensure that everyone is using the most effective exit route and teaches students to follow instructions and remain calm. Practicing how to safely and calmly leave an area can mean the difference between life and death in an emergency. Drills are conducted in accordance with state law. All drills will not be pre-announced.
